My old entry on the head of Henry IV was getting a sudden spike of Google interest, so I realized I had to get the Louis XVI news up and running pronto. Don't let me pre-empt you, though! The more the merrier, especially on a great story like this one. :)

None whatsoever. Both published studies note that the owners wish to remain anonymous. The only specifics about their ownership of the gourd I could find was that they have a letter they wrote to the director of the Musee Carnavalet in Paris dated January 31st, 1900, which presumably mentions the artifact. No idea what was in the letter. It was brought up parenthetically as evidence that the family has owned the gourd for more than a century.

I'm tremendously curious about the ownership history. I don't know why they're being so secretive about this. If I had such a cool thing I'd be bragging about it non-stop.

Is there any hint to the identity of "the Italian family" or the channels through which the...gourd (has a word ever seemed more inadequate?) reached them? Did they merely acquire it as a curiosity or was there a political context?

Well you are certainly fast on the draw! Second time I was going to putter around and create a post only to see you've already crafted a delightful and thorough exegesis on the topic. Sheesh! :-) Happy 2013
