5,000,000!

Just a short note today to announce that when I wasn’t looking, The History Blog passed 5,000,000 total pageviews since I installed the counter in September 2009. I posted about crossing the threshold of the first million in September of 2011, so stat-wise we’re moving along at a vigorous pace despite certain setbacks. This time I missed the moment the odometer flipped by more than 100,000, but I figured it’s still worth taking a moment to plant the 5 million flag.

Thank you all so much for your eyeballs and your comments and your hot tips and your kind words and for sharing my nerdy enthusiasms.

  1. You send me into areas of the history and art world that I would maybe not go into on my own vocation. I thank you for your efforts.

  2. Liv, I’m sure you don’t remember but I was the woman who found you when I was looking for somewhere else and, hours later, was happily engrossed in your site…my bed unmade, my self unwashed, uncombed and fed with only a peanut butter & raisin sandwich…to keep my mouse hand free.

Like Columbus, I couldn’t have stumbled upon a better shore.

It took me nearly a year to go through your archives and it was a time of happy immersion. You have ZERO idea of how much pleasure you actually bring.

As for the tickover… :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie:

    Well-deserved!

    1. Of course I remember! I’m thrilled to have kept you interested after your epic binge-reading of the full archives.

Confession time: sometimes when a random old entry gets search engine attention, I reread it out of curiosity, inevitably cringe at how short and research-light it is and then obsessively seek out a bigger picture to replace the sad little ones I used to use.

  3. I don’t comment often, but I check your posts in my reader every day and often send links to nautical discoveries to an undersea archeologist friend, and links to Vikings to a Viking author friend, and links to Richard III to a Shakespeare friend. One of the best parts of having such friends is discovering such great articles to share with them, so congrats andmany thanks!

    1. What rich conversations you must have. Congratulations on your awesome friends. Get your linking finger ready because I feel a shipwreck post coming on. 😉

  4. Congrats! I too check this excellent blog everyday and am always learning something new. Your commentary is also both well written and entertaining, with just the right amount of humor. Good luck to many million more!

    1. Thank you, Otto! I love your name, btw. I was born on October 8th, so even though “Otto” is of Germanic origin and has nothing to do with the Latin root “oct” meaning 8, I still have a fondness for it by association. Also palindromes are objectively awesome.

  5. Thanks for providing this amazing blog. The content is always on point and you’re efforts are always appreciated :). I’ve been reading daily for several months and finally decided to leave a comment especially since it’s such a cool milestone. Thanks for providing my eyeballs with there daily word nutrition :boogie:. Here’s to you and to many more page views to come :thanks:

  6. Congratulations, well done! I enjoy your posts daily. :thanks: :thanks: :thanks: :thanks: :thanks:

  7. Congrats! I love this site! You break down history news and discoveries in an fresh way that misses nothing, but is easily understood and retained. Great job!!

  8. To say honestly, the news from the history blog is the only news I decided to read. There is a lot of interesting information, helpful comments and enthusiasm on this blog. Thank you very much for such a great job! Our past is full of surprises and mysteries and I think the blog keeps the connection between the two worlds 🙂

    1. Oh wow, I hope it does that. For we history nerds, that connection is a real and living thing, very much worth preserving and strengthening, if at all possible. :thanks:

  9. Congratulations! I’m only a recent reader of yours, but I’m very impressed by the huge amount of research, interesting new information and carefully chosen illustration you put into this impressive historic website. Lots of rich comments as well! Best wishes for the next years 😉

  10. I love your blog and check it every other day to see what you’ve been up to. I think it’s one of the best historical and archaeological blogs out there. Please don’t stop. My favorites are the archaeology posts.

    1. I’m not sure how I’ve managed to blog daily for close to 7 years. If you had told me I would be able to do it back then I would have laughed in your face. Certainly getting such wonderful feedback from readers is a large part of it. I can’t stop because I don’t want to disappoint you! :thanks:

  11. Congrats! I have been following your blog for over a year now, if I reckon rightly, and have immensely enjoyed your wide variety of posts. Where else can I read about books bound in human skin followed by Peruvian textiles? Though of course, things to do with the Middle Ages are my favorite. Again, congrats, and may many more posts follow! 😀

    1. In college the Middle Ages were my concentration, so I share your love wholeheartedly. Finding stories to blog about has been the impetus for a significant expansion of my areas of historical interest. Now I’m fully obsessed with Peruvian textiles, Chinese bronzes and Maya animal-named dynasties too.

      Thank you! :thanks:

  12. Congrats!!!! Thanks for such an interesting blog. And for keeping us nerdy Richard 3rd fangils informed.

  13. I, too, have been a daily visitor for quite some time now (a year? two? time flies!). Thank you so much for it, it’s top notch, always interesting, and much appreciated!

    1. Time really does fly. I’m just two years away from my 10th blogging anniversary, although really that’s a technicality since I only posted a few times in 2006 and only really began to write regularly a year and a half later.

      Thank you!
