Lower than that most of the time, I would imagine. What I meant was that the temperature never (or rarely) goes past 10C.

I think they found whiskey in Shackleton’s camp, not Scott’s. Anyway, butter wouldn’t have saved Scott’s team, I’m afraid. They suffered from severe exposure.
