World’s ten oldest jokes

Ah, the things one learns on the intertubes. I just found out, for instance, that Sumerian humor is definitely not my bag, much like the Farrelly brothers.

A humor website has compiled a list of 10 really, really old jokes culled from historical sources. Most of them reek, especially the Sumerian one about the wife not farting on her husband’s lap. Um… Okaaaaay…

Now Augustus Caesar, on the other hand, was one funny bastard. Literally, if the punchline has a kernel of truth to it.

Augustus was touring his Empire and noticed a man in the crowd who bore a striking resemblance to himself. Intrigued he asked: “Was your mother at one time in service at the Palace?” “No your Highness,” he replied, “but my father was.” (Credited to the Emporer Augustus 63 BC – 29 AD)
